Typologies for Special Natural Resource Districts: Protecting Aquatic Resources

The Special Natural Resource Districts text amendment by New York City Department of City Planning’s Urban Design Division codifies best practices and streamline the special districts rules to reflect updated environmental science and a more holistic approach to natural resource preservation with clear development standards  in New York City. I conducted geospatial analysis and urban design analysis using updated remote sensing data to delineate wetlands and assess development impacts on protected aquatic resources along the NYC coastline.

Our research and design efforts focused on updating the regulations in Staten Island as a case study to assess how already established Special Natural Resource Districts can be updated to further protect wetlands and promote development that it sensitive to local natural resources.
